Lesson 2

Collect Pet Data

Est. Class Sessions: 2–3

Summarizing the Lesson

Continue the discussion about the classroom pets data by asking student pairs to create a question about the pets that other students could answer by looking at the graph or data table. Allow sufficient time for student pairs to create the question and solve the problem. Have connecting cubes, number lines, and the 100 Chart in the Student Activity Book Reference section readily available.

Upon completion, select student pairs to present their questions to the class. Other class members try to solve the problem and describe the strategy they used to find the answer.

Organize student pairs with two other pairs of students. Student pairs can then share their question with four other students and have them solve them. This gives students a chance to solve two other problems and discuss the different solutions of their classmates.

Assign the Room 222's Pets Graph pages in the Student Activity Book to assess students' abilities to interpret a bar graph.

Assign the Room 222's Pets Graph pages in the Student Activity Book to assess students' abilities to read a table or bar graph to make predictions and solve problems about a data set [E7].
