Each student pair will need 17 counters (e.g., pennies, connecting cubes). Demonstrate how to play 17 Counters by playing against a student. Ask:

  • How do I know if a number is even? (Each counter can be paired up with another number.)
  • How do I know if a number is odd? (After pairing them up, there is a leftover.)

T. Play 17 Counters

  1. You and your partner will need a pile of 17 counters.
  2. Take turns taking 1, 2, or 3 counters from the pile.
  3. The winner has an odd number of counters.
