Other possible partitions of 28 include 28 = 14 + 14 and 28 = 10 + 10 + 8. Encourage students to write as many number sentences as they can. You may want to start a chart listing all the number sentences students suggest.

A. Mr. Smith's Third-Grade Class, Part 1

Mr. Smith's third-grade class has twenty-eight students. He asked them to write number sentences showing how twenty-eight can be broken into parts. Here are two of the number sentences they wrote:

28 = 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 3

28 = 1 + 2 + 4 + 7 + 14
