TIMS Challenge

Assign this DPP item as a Problem of the week.

Students can use a calculator to divide: 25,000 g ÷ 100 g = 250.

Or, they can make a table: Since it takes ten 100 g masses to make a 1000 g mass, it takes 25 × 10 = 250 of the 100 g masses to make 25,000 g. Other strategies are possible.

L. Kilograms

A third-grader has a mass of about 25 kilograms, which is 25,000 grams. If you had a big two-pan balance, how many 100-gram masses would you need to balance this third-grader?
