Students build a conceptual understanding of area by estimating the relative areas of cloud pictures, filling each using a nonstandard unit (pennies), then counting the pennies. They also compare clouds in terms of length and width.

Materials Preparation

Prepare Cloud Cutouts. Cut out each of the three clouds from a copy of the first Clouds page in the Student Activity Book.

Prepare Optional Targeted Practice. Place pennies and drawing paper in a center to practice finding the area of a shape with nonstandard units.
