1.NBT.B
Understand place value. (1.NBT.B.3)
1.MD.1
Measure lengths indirectly and by iterating length units. (1.MD.A.1, 1.MD.A.2)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in
solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.

In this lesson, students continue to explore different aspects of size among two-dimensional figures. They begin by listening to an extension of the story “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” Then they measure the height and width of the story’s three rectangles in inches and their area in square inches.

Content in this Lesson

  • Measuring length in inches [E5].
  • Comparing and ordering quantities (e.g., lengths and areas) [E1].
  • Finding the area of a shape by counting square units [E6].
  • Collecting and organizing data in a table.
  • Recognizing that different shapes can have the same area [E4].
  • Finding an efficient strategy for solving a problem [MPE2].
  • Using labels to explain what numbers mean [MPE6].
