Encourage students to write number sentences for their problems. Ask them to describe their strategies.

  1. 7 clowns
  2. 9 elephants
  3. 4 peanuts
  4. Possible strategy. 4 + 4 = 8 and 4 + 5 is one more, or 9.

C. At the Circus

Use cubes, number lines, or ten frames.

  1. Todd saw 3 clowns riding bikes. Four clowns were on the high wire. How many clowns did Todd see?

  2. Gwen saw 4 elephants in the first ring at the circus. She saw 5 in the second ring. How many elephants did Gwen see?

  3. The monkey had 8 peanuts. He threw 4 at another monkey. How many peanuts did he have left?

  4. Show or tell how you solved Question 2.
