Lesson 5

Compare

Est. Class Sessions: 1

Summarizing the Lesson

Use Symbols to Compare Numbers. Summarize the lesson by displaying the Compare Numbers Master that provides practice with comparing quantities and using symbols to represent those comparisons. For each pair of numbers, ask students to draw a box around the greater quantity and circle the symbol that correctly completes the comparison statement. Then ask a student to read the comparison statement. Students can indicate responses using simple hand signals. See Figure 3. For the last item, have students suggest a number that correctly completes the comparison.

For independent practice, assign the Use Symbols pages in the Student Activity Book.

The Use Symbols pages in the Student Activity Book can be used to assess students’ abilities to compare and show quantities using symbols [E1, E2].
