Display the appropriate gram masses to help students visualize the problem. You can have students draw a picture to show their answer for Question 2. Have number lines and cubes readily available.

  1. The scissors have a mass of 19 grams: 5 g + 5 g + 5 g + 4 g or 15 g + 4 g = 19 g. The ruler has a mass of 16 grams: 10 g + 5 g + 1 g = 16 g.
  2. Add three 1-gram masses to the pan with the ruler.
  3. Two pairs of scissors have a mass of 38 grams. Solutions will vary. Possible solution: three 10-gram masses, one 5-gram mass, and 3 one-gram masses.
