Have students share solution strategies. Students may draw open number lines to solve.

  1. Estimation strategies will vary; C. 1100; Possible response: I know 1000 is too low and 1200 is too big, so 1100 is the closest estimate.
  2. 203 fewer laps; 481 − 278 = 203 or 278 + 203 = 481
  3. 1150 laps; Strategies will vary; Possible strategy:

669 = 600 +   60 + 9
+ 481 = 400 +   80 + 1
1000 + 140 + 10 = 1150
