Summarizing the Lesson

The problems on the Subtraction Strategies pages in the Student Activity Book review the subtraction strategies discussed in this lesson. In Question 1, students solve the subtraction problem 65 − 28 using their own methods. For Questions 2–4, students complete problems that use strategies similar to Jerome's, Tanya's, and Nila's. Question 5 asks students to choose one of the three strategies and apply it to a new problem. Question 6 is a set of problems that provides more practice. In Question 7, students explain their thinking for one of the problems in Question 6.

Use Check-In: Questions 6–7 on the Subtraction Strategies pages in the Student Activity Book to assess students' abilities to apply place value concepts [E1], represent and solve subtraction problems with number lines [E2], and subtract using mental math strategies [E3].

The Workshop in Lesson 5 provides targeted practice.
