Students work in pairs or a small group to determine what they would serve at a class party given a list of party items and their prices, the number of students in the class, and a spending limit. Students explain their choices and show how their plans meet the given criteria.

Materials Preparation

Prepare List of Steps. Determine and write a list of steps you want students to follow while they are working on the Lesson. See Figure 1 for a sample list. If you want groups to check in with you at any point in the process, include that in your list.

Student Work Samples. Prepare copies of student work for students to review. Some student work samples are provided as Masters. You can also use samples of work from students in your classroom.

Digit Cards. Make a set of Digit Cards 0–9 using index cards, a deck of playing cards, or the Digit Cards 0–9 Masters. If using playing cards, the ace can stand for 1 and a face or joker card can stand for zero. These cards will be used to play a game in DPP item Z.
