MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.

Students compare and order the number of connecting cubes in their trains from Lesson 4. Then they compare the length of six links with the lengths of classroom objects.

Content in this Lesson

  • Comparing and ordering quantities using more, less, or about the same [E3].
  • Connecting representations of quantities [E6].
  • Representing quantities of objects on a number line and with counters [E7].
  • Measuring length with non-standard units (links) [E8].
  • Collecting and organizing data.
  • Developing number sense for small numbers.
  • Counting a collection of 0–20 objects [E1].
  • Counting on from a given number [E4].

Materials Preparation

Customize Assessment Master. Prepare the Measuring with Ten Links Assessment Master by filling in the table with objects in your classroom that students can measure. They will be measuring with 10-link chains. Try to choose at least one item that is less than 10 links and one item that is more than 10 links.

Gather Trains of Connecting Cubes. Use the collection of trains from Lesson 4 or prepare as many trains of connecting cubes as the number of students in class. For example, for a class of 25 students, build trains with
1–25 cubes.
