Lesson 2

Counting On

Est. Class Sessions: 1–2

Summarizing the Lesson

Display and distribute the In My Home Homework Master. Tell students that they are going to go home and count objects. All students will count the number of doors, pets, clocks, and sinks. Students will also choose three other items to count (e.g., chairs, cups).

When students return with the completed homework assignment, give students a chance to compare their data to another student's data. Students may need counters to support their reasoning.

  • Do you have the same number of any item?
  • Who has more [doors]? How many more?
  • Who has fewer [pets]? How many fewer?

After student pairs have had a chance to compare their data, ask students to make some whole-class comparisons.

  • Who thinks they have the most [pets]? How many do you have?
  • Who does not have [a pet]?
  • Which items did you count quickly?
  • Which items did you count by counting each one individually?
