TIMS Bit

Encourage students to share their strategies.

  1. 9 + 3 = 10 +
  2. 8 + 4 = 12
  3. 9 +  5 = 8 + 6
  4. 5 + 7 =  2 + 10
  5.  4 + 9 = 8 + 5
  6. 10 + 3 =  4 + 9
  7. Possible response:
9 +  5 = 8 + 6; because one addend went up, the other addend will go down.
  8. Possible response: I agree with Ana. Her logic makes sense and I solved each side of the equal sign and they are the same when I put 2 in the box.

Ongoing Assessment

Use DPP item C to assess students' fluency with the addition facts in Group E [E7] and the related subtraction facts [E8].

C. Adding Nine

  1. 9 + 3 = 10 +

  3. 9 + = 8 + 6
  4. 5 + 7 = + 10
  5. + 9 = 8 + 5
  6. 10 + 3 = + 9
  1. Show or tell how you solved Question C.
  2. Aha solved: 5 + 7 = + 10
  3. Do you agree with Ana? Why or why not?
