Mathematical Standards

3.OA.A
Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division. (3.OA.A.1, 3.OA.A.2, 3.OA.A.3)
3.OA.B
Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division. (3.OA.B.5)
3.OA.C
Multiply and divide within 100. (3.OA.C.7)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Students solve a series of problems in which they divide money equally among the members of a family. They write number sentences to show their solutions.

Content in this Lesson

  • Solving problems involving money.
  • Multiplying and dividing using mental math strategies [E3].

Materials Preparation

Prepare a Collection of Coins. Provide students with a collection of coins to help them represent solution strategies to multiplication and division problems. Actual pennies, dimes, and nickels or plastic coins can be used. If either of these options is not available, make copies of the Pennies, Nickels, and Dimes Masters and have students cut out the coins they will need.

E3.
Multiply and divide using mental math strategies (e.g., reasoning from known facts, repeated addition and subtraction).
E4.
Represent solution strategies for problems involving multiplication (e.g., models, drawings, number lines, tables, number sentences, and graphs).
E5.
Represent solution strategies for problems involving division including interpreting remainders (e.g., models, drawings, number lines, tables, number sentences, and graphs).
MPE1.
Know the problem. I read the problem carefully. I know the questions to answer and what information is important.
MPE2.
Find a strategy. I choose good tools and an efficient strategy for solving the problem.
MPE3.
Check for reasonableness. I look back at my solution to see if my answer makes sense. If it does not, I try again.
MPE5.
Show my work. I show or tell how I arrived at my answer so someone else can understand my thinking.
MPE6.
Use labels. I use labels to show what numbers mean.
