Mathematical Standards

3.OA.A
Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division. (3.OA.A.1, 3.OA.A.2, 3.OA.A.3)
3.OA.B
Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division. (3.OA.B.5)
3.OA.C
Multiply and divide within 100. (3.OA.C.7)
3.OA.D
Solve problems involving the four operations, and identify and explain patterns in arithmetic. (3.OA.D.9)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP7.
Look for and make sense of structure.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

In this lesson, students use patterns in graphs to solve problems involving multiplication and division, then use other solution strategies to check their work.

Content in this Lesson

  • Identifying, extending, and representing patterns in data tables and graphs to solve problems [E1, E2].

Materials Preparation

Student Work Samples. Prepare copies of student work for students to review in Part 2. Each student pair will need work from one student to review. Some student work samples are provided as Masters: Colleen's Work, Marta's Work, and David's Work. To efficiently review work from more than one student, have different students review different student work. For example, ask a third of the class to review Colleen's work, a third of the class to review Marta's work, and the remaining third to review David's work. You can also use samples of work from students in your classroom.

E1.
Identify and extend multiplicative patterns represented in graphs, tables, and number lines.
E2.
Represent multiplicative patterns in tables, graphs, and number lines.
E3.
Multiply and divide using mental math strategies (e.g., reasoning from known facts, repeated addition and subtraction).
E4.
Represent solution strategies for problems involving multiplication (e.g., models, drawings, number lines, tables, number sentences, and graphs).
E5.
Represent solution strategies for problems involving division including interpreting remainders (e.g., models, drawings, number lines, tables, number sentences, and graphs).
E7.
Read a table or point graph to find information about a data set.
MPE2.
Find a strategy. I choose good tools and an efficient strategy for solving the problem.
MPE3.
Check for reasonableness. I look back at my solution to see if my answer makes sense. If it does not, I try again.
MPE5.
Show my work. I show or tell how I arrived at my answer so someone else can understand my thinking.
MPE6.
Use labels. I use labels to show what numbers mean.

E9.
Demonstrate fluency with the multiplication facts for the square numbers.
E10.
Determine the unknown number in a multiplication and division sentences relating three whole numbers for the square numbers.
