Lesson 4

Paper-and-Pencil Multiplication

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Summarizing the Lesson

Ask students to refer to the Multidigit Multiplication Strategies Menu in the Student Guide Reference section.

  • What strategies on the menu did you use for multiplication in this lesson? (We used rectangles, all-partials, the combination method, and the compact method.)
  • Which strategy do you find most helpful for multiplying multidigit numbers?
  • What is helpful about that method?
  • Which strategy is the most accurate for you? When do you make the fewest mistakes?

Ask students to refer back to the Multiplication Digits Game section in the Student Guide. Ask them to play the game using the two playing boards shown in Figure 2. Remind students to use the Multidigit Multiplication Strategies Menu to help them solve the multiplication problems in the game. Ask students to verify their answers by multiplying each problem using a different method from the menu.

Remind students that they can play the game to find either the greatest or smallest product. Encourage students to explain their strategies for playing the game with their group and with the whole class.

  • Why did you pick that box for that digit?
  • Could you place the digits differently to get a higher product?
  • How do your strategies change when you are trying to get the smallest product instead of the greatest? (Place greater digits in boxes with smallest place value to get the smallest number, and vice versa.)
