Mathematical Standards

5.NBT.B
Perform operations with multidigit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths. (5.NBT.B.5)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP7.
Look for and make use of structure.

Students explore strategies for multiplying multidigit numbers. They begin by developing their own strategies to solve problems and then they apply area models. This exploration leads to the development of methods that use rectangles and expanded form.

Content in this Lesson

  • Multiplying two-digit numbers by two-digit numbers using mental math and paper-and-pencil methods.
  • Representing and solving multiplication problems using rectangle models.
  • Inventing strategies for multiplication.
  • Using a rectangle array model to represent multiplication.
  • Using expanded form to solve multiplication problems.
  • Choosing appropriately from among mental math, estimation, and paper-and-pencil methods to find products [E6].
  • Multiplying multidigit numbers using mental math and paper-and-pencil methods (expanded form, rectangle model, all-partials, compact) [E4].

E4.
Multiply multidigit numbers using mental math and paper-andpencil methods (expanded form, rectangle model, all-partials, compact).
E6.
Choose appropriately from among mental math, estimation, and paper-and-pencil methods to find sums, differences, and products.
MPE2.
Find a strategy. I choose good tools and an efficient strategy for solving the problem.
MPE4.
Check my calculations. If I make mistakes, I correct them.
