Developing the Lesson

Part 1: Introduce Spin a Number Game

Demonstrate the Game. Organize students into groups of three or four for the game. Each group will need about 200 connecting cubes. Display the Spin a Number Game Spinners page from the Student Activity Book and demonstrate the game for the class. Using the display, spin the tens spinner and the ones spinner to create a two-digit number. Record that number on the display of the Spin a Number Recording Sheet from the Student Activity Book.

  • Who can show this number on the number line?
  • What is the number sentence that matches this?
  • Show this number with connecting cubes and write the related number sentence.
  • How can you show this number another way with connecting cubes?
  • How is this number sentence different?

See Figure 2 for a sample completed recording sheet.

Play Introductory Round of Game in Groups. Next have student groups play one round of the game. They should spin a new two-digit number using the spinners on the Spin a Number Game Spinners page and work together as a group to complete one Spin a Number Recording Sheet for that number. If students are arranged in groups of three, they can take turns spinning for numbers, and each student can show a different way to represent the number on the recording sheet for every round. If they are in groups of four, one student can spin the number while the other three represent it. The student who spun can be responsible for verifying that all three representations show the same number.

As groups are working, circulate to see if any students are struggling with the activity. In Part 2 of the Workshop, students will select a version of the game to play depending on their progress.
