Lesson 3

Cubes and Place Value

Est. Class Sessions: 2–3

Summarizing the Lesson

After students have had an opportunity to play at least two rounds of the game, conclude the lesson by discussing the game.

  • How did you decide to take ones or tens?
  • How did you add the numbers in this number sentence?
  • How close did you get to 100?
  • How many tens are in 100? (10 tens)
  • Let's pretend the rules to the game were different and you wanted to get 100 exactly in just two spins. What could you spin the first time and the second time to total 100? (Possible response: 8 tens and 2 tens)
  • What number sentence matches these spins? (80 + 20 = 100)
  • Name some other ways to get 100 in just two spins, and the matching number sentences. (Possible response: 3 tens and 7 tens; 30 + 70 = 100)

Assign the Matching Cubes and Numbers Homework Masters. Students practice making connections between place value concepts and representations of numbers with connecting cubes and number sentences. They will see bundles of 10 stacks of ten cubes on the Master. You may choose to show them a model of a bundle of 100 before the assignment. See Figure 5.
