Part 2: Place Value Practice Workshop

Choose Place Value Practice with Menu. Have students refer to the Place Value Practice Workshop Menu page in the Student Activity Book. See Figure 3. During this part of the Workshop, the menu will help guide students to activities that will provide the level of practice they need. There are two activities:

  • Place Value Problems: Students work with a partner to solve the problems on the Show the Number pages in the Student Activity Book.
  • Spin a Number Game: Students work with a partner or partners to play games with either 2-digit or 3-digit numbers.
  • Think about the Spin a Number Game. You partitioned numbers into tens and ones. Do you need more practice with this or are you ready for a challenge?
  • Look at the second row of the menu. If you need a little more practice, choose to play the game with 2-digit numbers and spin the tens and ones spinners.
  • If you are ready for a challenge, choose to play the game with 3-digit numbers and spin all three spinners.
  • Think about which game will help you the most and circle it.
  • You will work on the Show the Number pages with a partner. Then you will play the game you chose.

Solve Workshop Problems. Assign the problems on the Show the Number pages in the Student Activity Book. Allow students to choose their own partners. Student pairs will look at the partitioning and representations of other students and practice using number lines, number sentences, and connecting cubes to represent partitions of numbers. Each pair will need about 200 connecting cubes and a 200 Chart from the Student Activity Book Reference section. Students should work through as many problems as they are able. See Content Note.

The problems on the Show the Number pages in the Student Activity Book are organized with the easier problems at the start and the more difficult problems at the end. Students start with Question 1 and work to get as far as they can. More confident students will work more quickly and therefore get to the more difficult problems. Students who do not complete all the questions can be given additional time or the incomplete problems can be assigned as homework.

Play a Spin Number Game. Student pairs play the version of the game that they chose on the Place Value Practice Workshop Menu, either a 2-digit or a 3-digit game. Students having trouble with partitioning numbers into tens and ones should continue to work only with two-digit numbers, spinning just the tens and ones spinners. Students who are comfortable tackling larger numbers should be instructed to work with 3-digit numbers and spin all three spinners. After students have played a round, allow them to be flexible with their choices. If they determine that the task is too difficult or too easy, they can change the version of the game they are playing.
