Display the class number line (0–130) where students can see and reach it with a pointer.
Attach a desk number line (0–100) to each student's desk to use throughout the year.
Display the Math Practices page where all students can see it.
Gather a collection of containers. Each student pair needs three containers of different sizes and shapes. See Lesson 2 Materials Preparation.

LESSON | SESSIONS | DESCRIPTION | SUPPLIES |
---|---|---|---|
LESSON 1Take Your Time |
2 | Students review telling time to the nearest hour and half-hour. They are introduced to the terms AM and PM and explore telling time to the nearest fifteen minutes. |
|
LESSON 2Marshmallows and Containers |
2–3 | Students use the TIMS Laboratory Method to investigate the volume of different containers using marshmallows as their unit of measure. Students add, subtract, and compare whole numbers using this data. They discover that the tallest container is not always the one with the greatest volume and they read an Adventure Book story that highlights this concept. |
|
LESSON 3Cubes and Place Value |
2–3 | This lesson reviews grouping by ones, tens, and hundreds with a focus on place value. Students model different partitions of a number into tens and ones using connecting cubes. They play the Not More Than 100 Game to practice partitioning. |
|
LESSON 4Every Number Has Its Place |
2 | Students critique the work of Professor Peabody to reveal important place value concepts. They continue to compose and decompose numbers using ones, tens, and hundreds. Students represent partitions of 2- and 3-digit numbers with connecting cubes and number sentences, and recognize that partitions of the same number have the same total. |
|
LESSON 5Base-Ten Hoppers |
2 | Students use moves of ones and tens on number lines and 200 Charts to develop mental math skills and number sense. They develop flexibility composing and decomposing numbers. |
|
LESSON 6Workshop: Place Value Practice |
2 | This Workshop reinforces the place value activities of earlier lessons. Students practice showing numbers partitioned into hundreds, tens, and ones by drawing hops on the number line, modeling with connecting cubes, and writing number sentences. |
