Encourage students to share their strategies. Students will need connecting cubes and number lines readily available.

  1. 3 tickets
  2. 2 tickets will be left over.
  3. Drawing should show six groups of three with 2 remaining; possible number sentences:
    3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 20 tickets;
    3 × 6 + 2 = 20 tickets;
    6 × 3 + 2 = 20 tickets

B. Still at the Carnival

Kathy’s dad bought a sheet of 20 tickets for the rides. They have six people in the family.

  1. How many tickets can each person have if they share the tickets equally?
  2. Will any tickets be left over?
  3. Draw a picture that describes your answer.
