    8 + 2 = 10,
    10 + 20 = 30,
    30 + 10 = 40 red and blue jars
    53 − 40 = 13 black jars

  1. Two buses carried 53 students on the field trip. 27 students rode in one bus. How many rode in the other bus? Show or tell how you know.

  2. Sara sorted 53 jars in the art room. There were 18 blue jars, 22 red jars, and the rest were black. How many were black? Show or tell your strategy.
