Lesson 1

Time to the Nearest Five Minutes

Est. Class Sessions: 2–3

Summarizing the Lesson

Use the demonstration clock to review the concepts taught in this lesson. Begin by setting the large teaching clock to show 2:35.

  • What time is shown on the teaching clock? (2:35)
  • If I move the minute hand to show 3:00, how many minutes will elapse or pass? (25) Tell the strategy you used to find your answer. (Answers will vary but may include: I counted by 5s from the 7 to the 12 and reached 25 so I knew 25 minutes had passed. I know there are 60 minutes in an hour and since 35 minutes had already passed I subtracted 35 from 60 and got 25 minutes.)
  • Jason's watch says 1:00. He has been outside playing for 2 hours. What time did he start playing? (11:00)

If students have difficulty answering this question encourage them to use their individual clock. Since the question gives them the ending time of the activity and asks for the start time, students will need to move the minute hand twice around the clock in a counterclockwise motion.

Assign the Time and Time Again Assessment Master.

Use Time and Time Again Assessment Master to assess students' abilities to solve problems involving time measurements to the nearest five minutes [E2] and tell and write time to the nearest 5 minutes [E4].

The following activities can be organized into learning centers or assigned to provide targeted practice.

  • Prepare the Hours and Hours Master to provide targeted practice telling time to the nearest five minutes.
  • Prepare the Practice with Clocks Master. Use the following suggestion to provide specific targeted practice:
    • Telling time using the hour hand. Draw the hour hand on each clock. Ask students to estimate the time shown on each clock face.
    • Telling and writing time to the nearest five minutes. Draw the hour and minute hands on each clock. Ask students to write the time shown on each clock face.
    • Finding elapsed time. Draw the hands on each clock in the first column to show the starting time of various activities. Draw the hands on each clock in the second column to show the ending time for each activity. Ask students to find the elapsed time.
