Lesson 2

Measuring Area

Est. Class Sessions: 1–2

Summarizing the Lesson

Show students the curved shape at the top of the Check Each Other page in the Student Activity Book. Ask students to find the area in square centimeters. Using a display, have a student volunteer show the class how he or she counted and put the pieces together to find the area of the shape.

Refer students to Luis's Work and Grace's Work in Question 2. Ask students to compare their estimated area to the estimated areas found by Luis and Grace. Ask students to discuss and answer Question 2 with a partner. When students are ready, discuss their responses to this question as a class.

  • Do you agree with Luis's estimate? Why or why not? (No. Luis counted halves as whole square centimeters, so his count is too high.)
  • Do you agree with Grace's estimate? Why or why not? (No. Grace counted two square centimeters as 14, so her count is too low.)
  • Which estimate do you think is the closest to the actual area? (Approximately 15 square centimeters is the closest estimate.)

Collect student responses to Questions 2B and 2C to create a reasonable class response that would help improve Luis's and Grace's estimated areas.
