Mathematical Standards

3.MD.C
Geometric measurement: understand concepts of area and relate area to multiplication and to addition. (3.MD.C.6)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.

Students work in pairs or groups to determine the amount of material it would take to make a raincoat for Joe the Goldfish. They must first design the coat and then determine its area in square centimeters.

Content in this Lesson

  • Finding the area of curved shapes by counting square centimeters [E3].
  • Solving a problem involving area.
  • Solving open-response problems and communicating solution strategies
    [MPE 1–6].

Materials Preparation

Student Work Samples. Prepare to display copies of student work for students to review and discuss. There are two student work samples provided, but it is always valuable to choose work from previous years or other classes.

Prepare Feedback Box. Copy the two pages of the A Raincoat for Joe the Goldfish Feedback Box back to back so student groups have one for student-to-student feedback and another for teacher-to-student feedback.

E3.
Find the area of shapes with straight or curved sides by counting square units.
MPE1.
Know the problem. I read the problem carefully. I know the questions to answer and what information is important.
MPE2.
Find a strategy. I choose good tools and an efficient strategy for solving the problem.
MPE3.
Check for reasonableness. I look back at my solution to see if my answer makes sense. If it does not, I try again.
MPE4.
Check my calculations. If I make mistakes, I correct them.
MPE5.
Show my work. I show or tell how I arrived at my answer so someone else can understand my thinking.
MPE6.
Use labels. I use labels to show what numbers mean.
