TIMS Task

To begin the game, students draw a playing board on their papers. The teacher chooses a digit at random from a set of Digit Cards 0–9 and calls it out. (Make a set of Digit Cards using index cards, the Digit Cards 0–9 masters, or a deck of playing cards. The ace can stand for 1 and the joker or a face card can stand for zero.) Students place the digit drawn in a box in such a way as to get the largest sum. Once a digit is placed, it cannot be moved. Then the teacher chooses a second digit without replacing the first. Play continues until the teacher has read enough digits. The player with the largest sum wins.

N. Play Addition Digits Game

Draw a playing board like this on your paper.

As your teacher or classmate chooses the digits, place them in the boxes. Try to find the largest sum. Remember each digit will be used only once. Once you place a digit, it cannot be moved.
