Lesson 1

Inventing Ways to Divide

Est. Class Sessions: 1

Homework and Practice

  • Assign Home Practice Parts 1 and 2. In Part 2, students make fractions using the clues provided in each problem.
  • Assign DPP items A–B. In Task B, students solve a number puzzle with clues that use the terms factor, multiple, and prime.

Math Facts. Bit A provides self-assessment and practice with all the division facts.

In Home Practice Part 1, students make lists of facts they still need to learn and practice these facts at home with a family member using their Triangle Flash Cards.

DPP item A can be used as a self-assessment tool for students' fluency with the division facts. Use the results of this item to work with students to devise a plan for learning the facts they still need to study. Ask them to complete the following:

  1. Make a list of the problems they answered incorrectly or did not answer quickly. These are the facts they still need to study.
  2. Write all the number sentences in the fact family for each fact on their list.
  3. If they need to learn more than 3 or 4 facts, help them divide their list into smaller groups based on strategies for learning the facts.
  4. Ask students to organize their Triangle Flash Cards for these facts into the strategy groups and to practice one group at a time until they become confident with each group.
  5. Or have students make new Triangle Flash Cards using the Blank Triangle Flash Cards page in the Teacher Guide.
  6. Have students play games that practice the facts.
  7. Make calculators and multiplication charts available for students to use as they participate in activities and laboratory investigations, so they are not prevented from learning new concepts and skills.
