This DPP can be used as a Problem of the Week.

  1. Answers will vary depending on how many bags of each kind of seed the student chooses to buy. One possible solution is to buy 3 large bags and 1 small bag. Another possible solution is to buy 2 large bags and 3 small bags.
  2. The total cost for 3 large bags and 1 small bag is $17.50. The total cost for 2 large bags and 3 small bags is $17.50.
  3. No matter what combination of bags purchased, the cost will be $17.50 to cover the lawn.

D. Planting Grass

You need to cover 11,000 square feet of lawn with grass seed. A large bag of grass seed covers about 3275 square feet. A small bag covers about 1770 square feet. Show or tell how you solved each problem.

  1. How many bags of grass seed of each kind do you need?
  2. If a large bag costs $5.00 and a small bag costs $2.50, what does it cost to cover 11,000 square feet?
  3. Can you purchase seed for the lawn for less cost? Explain how you know.
