Students need to feel comfortable with estimating numbers of
objects quickly. Do this activity several times with less than ten
cubes.
Place the cubes randomly on the display and ask students to
estimate the total. Then place the cubes in a recognizable
pattern, such as a domino pattern, and ask them to estimate.
Discuss which is easier and why.
Repeat with more than ten cubes.
D. Flash a Number
I will place a number of cubes on the display. I will
flash the light on and off. Estimate the number of cubes.
