Lesson 6

Paper-and-Pencil Subtraction: Compact Method

Est. Class Sessions: 2–3

Summarizing the Lesson

Ask students to solve a problem such as 274 − 48 using the compact method, clearly showing the trade. Then ask one student to show his or her written work to the class and ask another student to solve the same problem another way. Discuss how the solutions are connected. If students have different answers, have a student demonstrate how to use addition to check answers.

Assign the Subtraction My Way pages in the Student Activity Book to assess students’ abilities to solve subtraction problems and determine the reasonableness of solutions.

Use the Subtraction My Way pages in the Student Activity Book with the Feedback Box to assess students’ abilities to use and apply place value concepts to make connections among representations of numbers using base-ten pieces, number lines, expanded form, and standard form [E1]; subtract multidigit numbers using mental math strategies [E3]; subtract two- and three-digit numbers using
paper-and-pencil methods (e.g., expanded form and compact) [E4]; check work for reasonable answers [MPE3]; and check calculations [MPE4].
