Lesson 1

Kid Fractions

Est. Class Sessions: 1

Summarizing the Lesson

To summarize the main concepts of this lesson, direct students' attention to the Kid Fractions pages in the Student Guide. Assign Questions 1–8 to student pairs. Remind students to use the Writing Numbers in Words page in the Student Guide Reference section as needed.

Upon completion, display the Kid Fractions pages. Ask several students to share the fractions they wrote in Question 4 describing the group of students from Mrs. Hunter's class pictured on the page. For each fraction given, ask a student to verify it and another to write the fraction in words or numbers.

In Questions 5–6, students use the symbols <, >, or = to complete number sentences comparing fractions. Have students write other number sentences using their fractions from Question 4.

Use Check-In: Questions 7–8 from the Student Guide to assess students' progress on representing fractions using objects [E1]; using words and numbers to name fractions [E2]; and identifying fractional parts of a set [E5].
