While reading “The Clever Tailor” story, students explore the meaning of different-size unit wholes. This lesson provides targeted practice with representing fractions and the concepts related to fractions. Students will also revisit the Fraction Hex Game from Lesson 6.

Content in this Lesson

  • Representing fractions using objects, models, and number lines [E1].
  • Using words and numbers to name fractions [E2].
  • Recognizing that fractional parts of a unit whole may be different shapes but must be the same size [E3].
  • Recognizing that the same fractional parts of different-size unit wholes are not equal [E4].
  • Identifying a fractional part of a set [E5].
  • Partitioning shapes by a given unit fraction [E6].
  • Identifying the unit whole when given a fractional part of a whole [E7].
  • Making connections among representations of fractions [E8].
  • Finding equivalent fractions using models [E9].
