A group of students stands at the front of the class while the teacher presents a fraction based on some characteristic of the group. The rest of the class tries to determine what characteristic of the group the teacher has in mind. Discussion focuses on the relationship between the part and the whole and the meaning of the numerator and denominator.

Materials Preparation

Triangle Flash Cards. Prepare copies of the Triangle Flash Cards on heavier paper or card stock. Have students cut apart each set and store them in an envelope. You may want to provide each student with two sets, one to use at school and one to take home.

Prepare to Display Table. Draw and then display the table shown in Figure 1, the Kid Fractions Table. Students will add to this table as the lesson progresses.
