TIMS Task

Use this DPP item to solve problems using the multiplication facts for the 2s and 3s. Provide counters or connecting cubes to support students' modeling of the problems.

  1. 14 thumbs. Possible response: There are two thumbs for each pair of gloves and there are 4 pairs of gloves, so I multiplied 2 × 4 = 8. There are also two thumbs in each pair of mittens and there are 3 mittens, so I multiplied 2 × 3 = 6. Then I added 8 thumbs + 6 thumbs = 14 thumbs.
  2. 21 sides. Possible response: There are 3 sides to each triangle and there are 7 triangles, so I multiplied 3 × 7 = 21 sides. Another possible response: Since each triangle has 3 sides and there are 7 triangles, I added 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 21 sides.
  3. 28 wheels. Possible response: There are two wheels on each bicycle and since there are 8 bicycles that makes 2 × 8 = 16 wheels. There are three wheels on each tricycle. Since there are 4 tricycles, that makes 3 × 4 = 12 wheels. Then I added 16 wheels + 12 wheels = 28 wheels to find the total.

B. Solving Problems

Show or tell how you solve each problem.

  1. How many thumbs are there in 4 pairs of gloves and 3 pairs of mittens?
  2. How many sides are there on 7 triangles?
  3. How many wheels are on 8 bicycles and 4 tricycles?
