TIMS Bit

To begin the game, students draw a playing board on their papers as shown. The teacher chooses a digit at random from a set of Digit Cards 0–9. Make Digit Cards on index cards, use the Digit Cards 0–9 Master in the Teacher Guide, or use a deck of playing cards. Use the ace for 1 and the joker or a face card for zero.

Students write the digit in a box in such a way as to try to get the largest sum. Once a digit is placed, it can't be moved. Then the teacher chooses a second digit without replacing the first. Play continues until the teacher has read enough digits to fill the boxes. The players with the largest sum win. Play several rounds, as time permits.

Ask students to share their strategies for placing the digits on their boards.

Q. Play Digits Game

Play Digit Game for Addition. Draw a playing board like this on your paper. As your teacher or classmate chooses the digits, write them in the boxes. Try to find the largest sum. Remember that each digit will be used only once.

Talk with a partner and share the strategy you used to decide where to place each digit.
