TIMS Task

    1. 36 square yards
    2. Possible response: Since the room is a square all the sides are the same length. Since the total perimeter is 24 yards each side will be 6 yards long because 4 × 6 = 24 yards. The area is 6 yards × 6 yards = 36 square yards.
    1. 32 square yards of brown carpet
    2. Possible response: The total area of the room is 8 yards × 8 yards = 64 square yards. The room is divided into 4 equal sections and 2/4 of the room is covered in brown carpet. 2/4 = 1/2 and 1/2 of 64 square yards is 32 square yards.

R. Finding Area

    1. John's family is getting new carpet. The carpet fitters need to know the shape, area, and perimeter of the room where the new carpet will be installed. They know that the room is a square with a perimeter of 24 yards. What is the area of the floor?
    2. Show or tell how you found the area.
    1. John's mom and dad want the carpet in the family room to be two different colors like the diagram. The floor is 8 yards long and 8 yards wide. How much brown carpet will they need?
    2. Explain how you found your answer.
