TIMS Task

  1. They eat 7/8 of the box each day. Possible response: I converted all the fractions to eighths: 1/2 = 4/8, 1/4 = 2/8, and 1/8 = 1/8. Then I added 4/8 + 2/8 + 1/8 = 7/8 of the box.
    1. Midnight sleeps longer each day.
    2. Midnight sleeps 1/10 of the day longer than Muffin. Possible response: Muffin sleeps 3/5 or 6/10 of the day. Midnight sleeps 7/10 of the day. 7/10 is 1/10 more than 6/10.
  3. Muffin used the door 45 times. Boots used the door 1/4 of 100 times or 25 times. Midnight used the door 3/10 of 100 or 30 times. 25 + 30 = 55, so Midnight and Boots used the door 55 times leaving 45 times for Muffin to use the door.

T. Tara's Cats

Use fraction circle pieces or drawings to solve. Tara has 3 cats: Boots, Muffin, and Midnight.

  1. Tara feeds them Cat Crunchies.
    Each day Boots eats 1/2 of the box, Muffin eats 1/8 of the box and Midnight eats 1/4 of the box. What fraction of the whole box do the three cats eat each day? Show or tell how you found your answer.
  2. Muffin and Midnight sleep for much of the day. Muffin sleeps for 3/5 of the day and Midnight sleeps for 7/10 of the day.
    1. Which of the two cats sleeps for a longer time each day?
    2. How much longer does it sleep each day? Show or tell how you solved this.
  3. Tara's cats come in and out through a cat door. Yesterday the cat door was used 100 times by her cats. Boots used the door 1/4 of the times and Midnight used it 3/10 of the time. How many times did Muffin use the cat door yesterday? Show or tell how you found your answer.
