Lesson 3

Sharing Cookies

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Summarizing the Lesson

In this lesson, students explored the concept of partitioning using fair shares. Conduct a class discussion about partitioning numbers with and without leftovers and writing number sentences to represent their work.

  • In The Doorbell Rang, Sam and Victoria shared 12 cookies and they each got six cookies. We said that we could write the number sentence 6 + 6 = 12 to show how many they would get.

Draw the circles with 6 in each circle and write the number 6 under each circle to demonstrate how to write the number sentence.

  • When 4 children shared 12 cookies, their fair share was 3 cookies. We wrote the number sentence 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12 to match the picture.
  • Now, let’s look at a problem with leftovers. If 7 children shared 15 cookies, who can demonstrate how many each will receive? What is the number sentence we can write to match this problem? (2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 15)

Continue with other numbers of children and cookies. Students will begin to connect the pictures with number sentences.
