Summarizing the Lesson

In this lesson, students partitioned cookies into groups of tens and leftovers as a step toward understanding the value of each digit in a two-digit number.

To continue the work with number sentences from the previous lesson, ask:

  • For the number 23, we had two full boxes of ten and three leftovers. How many in two full boxes of ten? (20) How many leftovers? (3)
  • What number sentence can we write for that answer? (10 + 10 + 3 = 23; 20 + 3 = 23)
Continue with other numbers of children and cookies. Students will begin to connect the pictures with number sentences.
