Developing the Lesson

Part 2: Compare Bean Counts

Display the Spill the Beans Data Table Master on which the class reported their totals previously. Tell students to focus on the totals in the Number column to answer questions you will ask. Have them use their 100 Chart as you point to their responses on the 100 Chart display.

  • Which numbers are between 40 and 50? 50 and 60?
  • Is [number] closer to [e.g., 30 or 40]?
  • Which two tens is [number] between?
  • Name a number greater than [number].
  • Name a number less than [number].

Continue using several other numbers from the data table.

Have students look at the Comparison Symbol Chart from Unit 8 displaying the symbols for "greater than" and "less than." See Figure 2.

Write incomplete comparison sentences on the board similar to those on the A Good Way to Count page in the Student Activity Book. See Figure 3. Review the meaning of each symbol. Select totals from the Spill the Beans Data Table and ask students to compare them. Record their responses on the board completing the sentences. Add a few more incomplete comparison sentences to the board and have students select totals to correctly complete each. Be sure to use both symbols and practice reading each completed sentence aloud with the class.
