Students practice counting objects using tens and ones. They play Spin for 50 in pairs. Players take turns spinning a spinner to determine the number of Xs to add to a set of five ten frames. The goal is to be the first to fill the ten frames with 50 Xs.

Content in this Lesson

  • Grouping and counting objects by tens and ones.
  • Representing and identifying numbers to 50 using ten frames [E1].
  • Representing the partitions of two-digit quantities as tens and ones [E2].
  • Using grouping language of tens and ones along with the conventional number names (e.g., 42 is 4 tens and 2 ones).

Materials Preparation

Prepare the Spinner for the Spin for 50 Game. If you do not have clear plastic spinners to place over the game page, students can use paper clips and pencils. Straighten out one end of the paper clip and place a pencil through the curved end. Then put the point of the pencil on the center of the spinner, and spin the paper clip around the pencil, using the straightened end as the pointer. See Figure 1.

Place Spin for 50 in a Learning Center. For targeted practice, make additional copies of the Spin for 50 game and recording sheet pages in the Student Activity Book and place them along with spinners in a learning center.
