Lesson 1

The Teens

Est. Class Sessions: 1–2

Summarizing the Lesson

Ask students to think about writing the numbers 10–20 as addition number sentences with ten as one addend. As the class tells you, write the number sentence above each connecting cube model displayed, just below the number and the word, for example write "10 + 3 = 13" just under "13 thirteen."

Provide time for students to independently complete the Showing Teens pages in the Student Activity Book. Explain that they need to fill in the missing numbers in the sentences below each picture or draw a picture to match the sentence given as indicated in each section. After adequate time has been provided, discuss solutions aloud.

Use the Showing Teens pages in the Student Activity Book to assess students' abilities to represent and identify numbers 11–20 using drawings, ten frames, and symbols [E1], and represent partitions of two-digit quantities as tens and leftover ones [E2].
