Lesson 2

Spill the Beans

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Summarizing the Lesson

Set up several stations around the room, each one with a collection of 40–70 objects to count. You might use paper clips, beads, beans, links, or connecting cubes. Make sure you note how many there are of each object. Write the name of each object and post it at the appropriate station for student reference. Have the students select four different objects and count them. The students complete the A Good Way to Count page in the Student Activity Book, recording the objects they counted, groups of tens, leftover ones, and the numbers.

For Questions A–B, students select any of their totals from the Number column to correctly complete each sentence. To complete Questions C–D students have to refer to the 100 Chart page in the Reference section of the Student Activity Book.

Use the A Good Way to Count page in the Student Activity Book to assess students' abilities to represent and identify numbers to 100 using counters, ten frames, 100 Chart, and symbols [E1]; represent the partitions of two-digit numbers as tens and leftover ones [E2]; and compare quantities and represent that relationship using less than, greater than, between, and closer to [E3].
