Assign the Counting Beans pages in the Student
Activity Book for students to complete individually.
Read the first paragraph to the students, so that they
understand the situation. When students have completed
the page, discuss the questions.
- How did you decide how many ten frames the girls
need to group the pinto beans? (Possible response:
I knew that the five in 52 meant that there were
five groups of ten and the two meant that there
were two ones left over.)
- How many lima beans did the girls have? (25)
- Explain how you know. (Possible response: There
were two full ten frames, so that means 10, 20
beans in them. Then the top row means that there
were five more, so 25 beans total.)
- Which bean was smaller, the pinto bean or the lima
bean? How do you know? (Possible response: The
pinto bean was smaller because more pinto beans
could fit into the cup than lima beans. 52 pinto
beans is greater than 25 lima beans, so the pinto
beans were smaller.)
Use the Counting Beans pages in the Student Activity Book to
assess students' abilities to group and count objects by ten
and leftover ones [E2]; represent and identify numbers to
100 using counters, ten frames, drawings, and symbols [E1];
read a table to solve problems about a data set [E8]; and
explain their work [MPE5].
