Lesson 6

Comparing Lengths

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Summarizing the Lesson

Practice Placing Numbers in Intervals. Use the display of the Where Does the Number Fit pages in the Student Activity Book to explain the activity. In Question 1 students place numbers in intervals. If you would like to save students' sorting, ask them to glue Question 1 and the number cards to another sheet of paper.

Use the Where Does the Number Fit pages with the Feedback Box in the Student Activity Book to assess students' abilities to represent quantities with connecting links [E1]; compare quantities and represent that relationship using less than, greater than, between (e.g., intervals), and closer to [E3]; and show work [MPE5].

For targeted practice, place customized copies of the Where Does the Number Fit Again Master in a learning center. Have number lines, ten frames, and 100 Charts readily available to help students determine where to place numbers.

Play Guess My Number. Play the game described on the Guess My Number Homework Master a few times in class to familiarize students with the game before sending it home. Have students play a few rounds with a partner. Player 1 selects a number and keeps it secret. Player 2 tries to guess the number. See the Sample Dialog.

Use this Sample Dialog to model the Guess My Number game for students.

Player 1: I am thinking of a number that is between 0 and 20.

Player 2: Is it 10?

Player 1: No, it is less than 10.

Player 2: Is it greater than or less than 5?

Player 1: Greater than.

Player 2: So, it is between 5 and 10. Is it 7?

Player 1: No, it's less than 7.

Player 2: It's between 5 and 10 and it's less than 7. Is it 6?

Player 1: Yes!

Students can use a number line, ten frames, or the 100 Chart in the Reference section to narrow down their guesses.
