Dimes, Nickels, and Quarters

Display the following coins: two dimes, a quarter, a nickel, and two pennies. See Figure 7. Ask students to work in pairs to find the total value of the coins. Ask them to try to find two ways to solve the problem. Discuss student strategies. Possible strategies include:
- Count on from 25¢: 35¢, 45¢, 50¢, 51¢, 52¢
- Begin with the quarter and first add the nickel, to make counting the dimes easier: 25¢, 30¢, 40¢, 50¢, 51¢, 52¢
- Use a 100 Chart to count using either of the above ways.
