Students divide groups of 10 pennies and 10 dimes into two piles. They write addition and subtraction sentences to represent the number combinations of their coin piles. They complete the lesson by finding the values of collections of pennies and dimes.

Content in this Lesson

  • Partitioning 100 into groups of ten [E1].
  • Representing partitions of numbers using coins and number sentences [E2].
  • Representing addition and subtraction using number sentences [E3].
  • Reading and writing numbers to 100 [E4].
  • Skip counting to find the value of a collection of pennies and dimes [E6].
  • Solving addition and subtraction problems involving multiples of ten using coins, ten frames, and the 100 Chart [E7].
  • Connecting representations of quantities (ten frames, coins, 100 Charts, symbols, number sentences).
  • Exploring the relationship between addition and subtraction facts and adding and subtracting multiples of ten.
  • Using labels to show what number mean [MPE6].
